Introduction / History

The Amawaka are a tribe who live in the southeast Amazon mostly in Peru while some live in Brazil. They have several names and one of them is Ipitineri.
In the 1700s missionaries were met with resistance by the Amawaka. By tradition the Amawaka lived in the Urubamba Valley in Peru. When rubber tappers raided them in the past, this caused them to move to other regions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today the existence of the Amawaka is threatened by disease and illegal logging. Most of them live in Puerto Varadera on the border of Peru and Brazil. They speak Panoan and their language is written in the Latin script. They have parts of the Bible available in their language. The Amawaka hunt, fish and work in industry. They harvest Brazil nuts.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most of the Amawaka are Christian, but they need discipleship.

What Are Their Needs?

They need help in adjusting to the modern world. As it stands, they are in danger of dying out as a people.
