Introduction / History

The history of the Brahmin Audichya begins over 1000 years ago. A king in the western Indian state of Gujarat invited Brahmins from the north to help him rule his kingdom. The word "Audichya" means northern person. Over 1000 Brahmin families accepted his invitation and became known at the Audichya Brahmins. The king rewarded these Brahmins with gifts of land and high positions in his court and government.

The majority of the Audich continue to live in Gujarat. They encourage their sons and daughters to obtain graduate degrees and achieve leadership in business, in education, in science and in religious service. Many Audich continue their traditional roles as being Hindu priests and scholars. Some Audich still own large tracks of land that is cultivated by lower castes.

The primary language of the Audich is Guajarati. As educated Indians, they also speak English, Hindi and other regional languages.

Where Are they Located?

Most of Brahmin Audich live in Gujarat. Smaller groups live in other regions of India and Pakistan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Brahmins have the highest rank in the caste system of Hinduism. The Audich marry only within their Brahmin caste but will not marry within their clan or family. Families arrange weddings with the consent of the young people. Adult marriage is the norm. Weddings are elaborate rituals lasting days. The newly married couple generally lives near or with the groom's parents.

The Audich are vegetarians who do not consume alcohol. Their main foods are rice, curries, millet, sorghum, vegetables and dairy products.

Caste councils promote their interests and decide legal disputes in the Audich communities.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Audichya practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. They worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. Hindus believe that be performing rituals and good works that they will attain moksha or freedom from the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. The Audich visit and serve at Hindu temples. They offer prayers, food, flowers and incense to their gods.

The main yearly holidays of the Audich people are Holi, the festival of colors, Diwali, the festival of lights and Navratri, the celebration of autumn. The Audich, as Brahmins, frequently officiate at the festivals.

What Are Their Needs?

The Brahmin Audichya need to hear the life-changing message of Jesus Christ in a way they can understand. They must be humbled to see themselves as lost sinners in need of a Savior. They need to see that only Jesus can offer them forgiveness for their sins, not the rituals or practices of Hinduism.

Prayer Points

Pray for Christ to reveal Himself to Brahmin Audich leaders.
Pray for Holy Spirit directed Christ followers to go to Brahmin Audich communities.
