The Gele people live in the center of Manus Island and also on a small island off the northeast coast.
They are multilingual. They speak Gele as their first language but can also speak the languages of their neighbors on Manus Island, the Ere and Kurti. Likewise, neighboring groups have learnt to speak Gele when required. Thank God for their capacity to speak multiple languages, providing a bridge for God's word. In particular, thank God that the Kurti have portions of the Bible in their language, including Genesis, Galatians and 1 Timothy. Pray this becomes a bridge for sharing God's word in Gele.
Those living on Manus Island have road access to the provincial capital, Lorengau, with all its services. This allows young people to progress to the high school or vocational centers that are located in Lorengau. Those who pursue higher education often end up working in Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, Goroka or overseas from where they send money back home to their relatives. Money sent home by educated relatives is a major source of income for Manus, including the Gele people. Thank God for the education opportunities and ask that educated Gele people will personally value the Bible and strongly support Bible translation for their people.
There is a high percentage of both general Christians and Evangelicals among the Gele people.
The Gele people need discipleship materials translated into their language.
Pray that the Gele people understand and embrace God's word.
