The Paps are a scheduled caste in northern Odisha that obtained their name because of an unusual folk tale. Before festivals and weddings they used to trap a wildcat to sacrifice to their regional god, Sambei Sambli. This god became annoyed by the practice, and turned the cat into stone, at which time everyone heard the sound "pap." That became their name, and they stopped sacrificing wildcats from that day forward.
Most are landless day laborers, so they must work for those who own land. Some still raise cattle like their ancestors. Those who live near the forests gather firewood and food. It has become difficult for them to find wild game in the forests, so they are more likely to eat vegetables and rice. They like wheat products, especially the oily, flat chapatti bread. They enjoy seasonal fruits, and rice is their staple food. They will eat any meats except beef or pork. Their men drink rasha, a fermented alcoholic beverage.
They seldom have access to modern medicine, and they only go to a hospital for serious emergencies. Instead, they have their own medicine men called vaidyas. Their literacy rate is low, so they continue taking on low-paying jobs.
As Hindus, the Pap community celebrates various Hindu festivals, and worship some of their gods. They also have their own house gods and clan deities. They appease them with offerings. Their pilgrimage centers are at Gaya, Padampur and Puri.
The Pap people need to put their hope in the King of kings, realizing that he is the one who gives them worth and dignity.
Pray for loving workers to go to the Pap people until there are disciples who make more disciples.
Pray the Lord will prepare the hearts of the Pap to understand and to believe the gospel.
Pray for the Lord to bless the Pap people with adequate education and medical facilities.
Pray for the Lord to bless the Pap people so abundantly that they will see he is the only one worthy of praise and worship.
