Bernde of Chad

Introduction / History
The Morom live in the Guera region of Chad. Morom village was founded before the 12th century, according to tradition. There are a few thousand inhabitants of this village, and about 25 families living in mixed communities elsewhere in Chad. The Morom are subsistence farmers living in a dry, mountainous area. They have no modern amenities like running water or electricity. Men and women live segregated lives. The Morom have been adherents of Islam for centuries. There are churches in some of the surrounding communities, but none in the village of Morom. There is a primary school in the village which most children attend, though attendance is not regular. No one from the village receives more than a primary education. The closest hospital is about an hour away by vehicle.
