Burmese of New Zealand

Introduction / History
About half of the refugees in New Zealand are from Burma or Myanmar as it is now also called. Most of the Burmese living there are refugees. It is said they remain in New Zealand as there is nothing for them in Burma. Though there are language problems, the children have homes to live in and can gain an education in New Zealand.

The community networks for women play a big part in helping women to get used to life in New Zealand. They provide information and help with keeping their culture. There are education classes for adults and children. Volunteers and teachers help the women to adjust to life there. They help with relationships between the Burmese and New Zealanders.

The Burmese in New Zealand speak Burmese and English. Most of them are Buddhists by religion. Many of them live in Wellington and Auckland.
