Japanese of Australia

Introduction / History
In a survey, Australia was given as the country that the Japanese most liked to live in. The Japanese first began to emigrate to Australia in the 1880s. Many of them worked at getting pearls and oysters from the sea. Others did sugar cane work.

More Japanese have arrived in Australia in the last 35 years with Australia becoming more lenient towards immigration from countries other than Europe about fifty years ago.

In World War II, the Japanese were kept under guard and then at the end of the war made to leave Australia. The number of Japanese people in Australia increased in the 1950s as a result of Japanese war brides marrying Australian volunteers in the Australian military who were in Japan when it was under occupation after the war.

With Japan then later becoming financially wealthy and becoming of economic importance to Australia, this led to stronger bonds between the two countries and more Japanese then came to live in Australia.

There are Japanese day schools in Melbourne and Sydney where many Japanese live. The Japanese in Australia speak Japanese and English.

Many Japanese in Australia work in skilled management and other professional work.

What are their beliefs?
The religion that is most followed is Buddhism. There are some Christians among them. More than half of them do not follow any religions. The Japanese wealth has led to most Japanese becoming materialistic and secular and this is an obstacle to the gospel message being given.

Prayer Points
* Pray that the Japanese dwell on the fact that wealth is temporary but what happens after this life is forever, leading to them seeking Jesus Christ.
* Pray that the Japanese Christians among them will give the other Japanese the gospel message and that it will be accepted.
