Adi Andhra of India

Introduction / History
The Adi Andhra are a Scheduled Caste in India. They have a somewhat low literacy level, so the gospel may need to be given in oral form too. Many live in Andhra Pradesh.

In Karnataka the Adi Andhra speak Telugu. They are not vegetarians and they eat pork and beef. Rice is a main cereal. They prefer cross-cousin marriages. Women are involved in finances and agriculture. The Madiga subgroup mends leather shoes. The Mala subgroup weaves cloth. Education is available for boys.

In Tamil Nadu the Adi Andhra speak Telugu and Tamil. Most are sweepers and scavengers. The Christians among them observe Hindu festivals and marry Hindus. Education is for boys and girls.

In Orissa the Adi Andhra speak Telugu, Oriya and Hindi. Some of them drive carriages and others are laborers. They are mostly Hindus but there are among them some Christians.
