Chitrakar (Hindu traditions) of India |
Introduction / History The Chitari live in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Hinduism is their religion. Their name comes from them drawing objects and making toys. They are not vegetarians and eat rice.
In Maharashtra the Chitari speak Konkani and read and write in Devanagari. They have birth and marriage rituals. The dead are cremated. On the death of the father, sons and unmarried daughters inherit the property. They carve and paint wood items and then sell them. They make use of family welfare help.
In Andhra Pradesh the Chitari speak, read and write in Telugu. They are monogamous. Divorced and bereaved men can marry again. On the death of the father, the sons inherit the property with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home. Prayer Points * Pray that Indian Christians lead them to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that gospel materials lead them to salvation. Text source: Anonymous |
