Introduction / History
The Chaptegar in Karnataka speak Konkani and read and write in Kannada. They are not vegetarians and like to eat fish. They eat rice as a staple cereal. They prefer marriages between cousins. There are birth and marriage rituals. The dead are cremated. They work in carpentry, government work, day laboring and other work. Family planning is used by them and they believe in having their children educated.

The Chaptegar in Kerala work making parched and beaten rice. Some of them work in agriculture. They read and write in Malayalam in addition to Kannada.

They are supposed to have come from Goa. Hinduism is their religion.
