Guria of India

Introduction / History
The Guria live in Orissa in India. They read and write in Oriya. The men are not vegetarians but many of the women are. They eat rice and wheat as cereals.

The Guria are exogamous, meaning that they marry outside of their group. They are allowed to divorce and marry again. On the death of the father, property goes to the sons while the oldest son becomes in charge of the home. There are birth and death rituals and the dead are cremated.

The traditional work of the Guria is the making of sweetmeat. Many of them are landowners who work in cultivating. Some are labourers, some have office jobs while others are self-employed.

The Guria have community councils to look after them and to judge in disputes. They are Hindus with Ganesh being their main god. They make use of help with irrigation.

Prayer Points
* Pray that the community council leaders will come to Jesus Christ and lead others of the Guria to Him also.
* Pray that God will give the Guria dreams and visions leading them to salvation.
