Hill Pulayan of India

Introduction / History
The Hill Pulaya or Mala Pulaya of India live in Kerala with some living in Karnataka. Mala means a hill or a mountain. They speak, read and write in Tamil. They also use Malayam for communicating with other groups.

The Hill Pulaya are not vegetarians and they eat rice as a cereal. They use palm oil and coconut oil for cooking. Men sometimes drink alcohol and smoke. Both men and women chew betel, a nut that colors the teeth a distinctive black.

The Hill Pulaya are poor and have small huts in forest regions. They are a scheduled tribe and work in agriculture. Ceremonies and rituals are performed by them. They bury the dead. Hinduism is their religion.
