Karnam of India

Introduction / History
The Kanakku Pillai are Hindus. They speak, read and write in Tamil. The word Kanakku means accountant which is their traditional work.

In Tamil Nadu, the Kanakku Pillai. are monogamous. They have adult marriages. Cousins can marry. There are birth and marriage rituals. Divorce is allowed. The dead are cremated. On the death of the father, sons inherit the property with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home.

They work in government and private service. Modern health services are used by them. They are well educated. They are vegetarians.

The Kanakku Pillai of Andhra Pradesh migrated from Tamil Nadu. Widows can marry again. Women are vegetarians but some of the men are not.

The Karnigar of Pondicherry are similar to the Kannakku Pillai of Tamil Nadu.
