Kandra of India

Introduction / History
The Kandra or Kondara are a scheduled caste in India. They are Hindus by religion. In Orissa they speak, read and write in Oriya. They are endogamous (meaning they prefer to marry within their group) and they work in cultivation. They have a low literacy level, so the gospel will need to be given in oral form as well as written.

The Kandra also live in West Bengal. They fish and are laborers. They speak Bengali. Most of them do not own land. They are not vegetarians and eat rice as a cereal.

In Andhra Pradesh the Kandra speak Oriya and Telugu. They prefer cross-cousin marriages. Divorce is allowed. When the father dies the property goes to the sons and the oldest son becomes in charge of the home. The dead are buried and cremated. Most of them do fishing for a living. They use modern medicines and do family planning.

Prayer Points
* Pray that God will give the Kandra dreams and visions leading them to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that gospel recordings will lead them to salvation too.
