Introduction / History
The Pulayan are a scheduled caste. Hinduism is their religion.

The Pulayan in Kerala speak, read and write in Malayalam. They are not vegetarians but do not eat beef and pork and eat rice as a cereal. They have cousin marriages. They are mostly landless and work in agriculture. Some of them work in cultivation. They believe in education.

The Pulayan in Tamil Nadu speak Tamil. They use modern medicine but do not like family planning. They work in cultivation and do craft work. Baskets are made by them.
