Patni (Hindu traditions) of India

Introduction / History
The Patni are a scheduled caste in India and Hinduism is the main religion. They speak Bengali.

In Assam some of the Patni, in addition to speaking Bengali, can speak Hindi and Assamese. They are not vegetarians and eat rice as a cereal. Most are landowners. They work in cultivation. They have a low literacy level and so the gospel message will need to be given in oral form too.

In West Bengal they work on ferries. The word Patni has to do with ferrying by boat. They use family planning. In marriage they avoid marrying relatives on the side of the father for five generations.

In Tripura the Patni live mainly in the western district. They work as laborers and other work such as pulling rickshaws. They use traditional and modern medicines.

Some of the Patni live in Manipur.

Prayer Points
* Pray that Gospel recordings will lead the Patni to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that Indian Christians will help lead them to salvation.
