Kahar Kamkar (Hindu traditions) of India

Introduction / History
The traditional work of the Kahar is to carry water and carry palanquins. They are Hindus by religion.

In Bihar they speak Mugahi and read and write in Devanagari. Divorce and marrying again are allowed. The dead are cremated. They have businesses. Community councils look after them.

In Uttar Pradesh the Kahar speak Bhojpuri and Hindi. On the death of the father, sons inherit the property with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home. They work in agriculture.

In Rajasthan the Kahar are not vegetarians and eat millet and wheat as cereals.

In Dadra and Nagar Haveli the Kahar speak, read and write in Gujarati. They sell fish for a living.

In West Bengal they are mainly farmers. In Tripura they are carpenters. The Kahar live in Delhi too.
