Ravidas Chamar of India

Introduction / History
The Ravidas are a scheduled caste in Assam in India. They arrived in the 1800s to work in the tea plantations.

The Ravidas speak Hindi, Bengali and Assamese and read and write in Bengali and Devanagari. They are not vegetarians and eat rice as a cereal. Women play an important role in social and financial matters.

The Ravidas are tanners, cobblers and drummers by tradition. Now many of them are cobblers and do agricultural work. They are Hindus and have regional gods.

They are not keen on family planning. Their attitude towards education is not positive so the gospel will need to be given in oral form too. The Ravidas prefer modern medicines however.

Prayer Points
* Pray that gospel recordings will bring the Ravidas to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that Assamese Christians will help lead them to salvation.
