Introduction / History
The Jalia Kaibarta were originally aborigines who later became part of the Hindu community. They are a scheduled caste.

The Jalia Kaibarta of West Bengal speak, read and write in Bengali. They are not vegetarians and eat rice. They have marriage rituals and the dead are cremated. Fishing is their main work. Some of them work in laboring and agriculture. Hinduism is their religion. They use modern medicines and family planning.

In Tripura, fishing is their main work. Some are teachers and others do admin work. Their education level is improving. They are also in other states of India such as Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
