Introduction / History In the 1860s, during the days of the British Empire, the British hired Afghans and Pakistanis to take camel caravans through the deserts of Australia. These were the first Afghans to arrive in Australia. Before 1979, there were a few Afghan students in Australia, but most arrived after the Soviet invasion of their country. Afghans were arriving in larger numbers during the 1990s, and some are still coming there today.
Where are they located? Afghans in Australia usually live in urban centers, especially Melbourne and Sydney. A smaller number live in Brisbane or Perth.
What are their lives like? The Pashtuns who live in Australia are usually professional people with skills in medicine, engineering, teaching, or business. They are eager to live their lives in a peaceful land without the hindrance of war and destruction.
What are their beliefs? Members of the Islamic religion are very difficult to influence. Pashtuns who decide to follow Christ are likely to be banished from their families. Consequently, there have been very few spiritual inroads among the Pashtuns wherever they live, including Australia.
What are their needs? Pashtuns need the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do: Open their eyes so they can see Jesus as he really is.
