Introduction / HistoryThe Ambalavasi are the fifth largest people group in Sri Lanka. They also live in India.
In India the Ambalavasi live in Kerala and have several Hindu castes. They work in the temples and with forms of art. Ambal means temple and vasi means inmate.
They have two groups, one who wears the thread and one who do not. Hinduism is their religion. They speak in Malayalam.
Some of the Ambalavasi castes are the Chakyar, Pushpakas, Muthatu, Pisharody and the Varyar. They are Brahmins.
