Introduction / HistoryThe Balti are a scheduled tribe and live in Jammu and Kashmir. They speak Balti and read and write in Perso Arabic. They eat barley as a staple cereal.
The Balti are Shia Muslims who have a connection with Buddhism. They work in agriculture and as laborers. The clergy settle disputes.
They use modern medicine but not family planning.
The Balti live in the Kargil region. They have an Islamic training school and the men have prayer at twelve noon on Fridays.
