Introduction / HistoryThe Kharot of India are a scheduled caste of Uttar Pradesh. They are endogamous and are of the Beldar caste who are nomads by history. Most live in the east of Uttar Pradesh.
Kharot comes from the word Khata which means grass and Kharot means a manufacturer of grass mats which was their occupation.
Many of them live in the Basti district. Most are landless and work as laborers in agriculture.
The Kharot are Hindus by religion and speak in Hindi.
