Introduction / History The Makrani originally came from the Makrani region of Pakistan. They were brought to Gujarat as mercenary soldiers in the service of Muslim rulers. The Makrani are proud of their military tradition. Today most Makrani work in agriculture although some still serve in the military and as law enforcement officers. Others work in trade and business. Where are they located? Though most Makrani people are Muslims who live in Pakistan or other parts of India, the tiny Sikh community lives in Haryana, a state in northern India near Punjab. What are their lives like? The Makrani only marry within their gotra or clan. Monogamy is the rule although having more than one wife is legal. Families arrange marriages with the consent of the young people. The newly married couple usually lives with or near the groom's parent. Sons inherit a father's property. Castes councils called jamats promote the Makrani interests and settle legal disputes. What are their beliefs? There is a small Sikh community among the Makrani people. Sikhism originated from a 15th century teacher named Guru Nanak Dev as a reform movement. He rejected the Hindu caste system, taught that all people were equal and that all have equal access to God. The Sikh God is formless, without gender and is to be found in everyone. One gets closer to God by living a good life and by practicing charity. Like Hindus, Sikhs believe in reincarnation and the law of karma; you reap what you sow in your previous life. Like Muslims, the Sikhs worship only one God.
One may recognize a Sikh man by his distinctive turban. All the 10 great Sikh gurus wore turbans. Sikh teaching mandates that a person not cut his or her hair. They worship their holy book, the Granth Sahib, which is a collection of hymns. What are their needs? The Sikh Makrani people need to find their way to the only Savior who died to pay for their sins.
