Introduction / History The word Gora is the traditional term or the region. It means "Mountains" or "Highlands." In the Gora dialect, the "Mountain People" or "Highlanders" are known as Goranci.
Where are they located? Gorani in Serbia are located between Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia. The majority live in several small communities in southern Kosovo, known as the Gora region.
What are their lives like? The Gorani Muslims, speaking their own Serbian Torlakian dialect, are the smallest minority in Kosovo. The United Nations Mission in Kosovo (NUMIK) redrew internal boundaries in such a way that a Gorani-majority municipality no longer exists. The Gora region was combined with a neighboring Albanian-populated region, so there is now an Albanian majority where they live. The Gorani people have been the target of the Kosovo Liberation Army and Protection Force.
Gorani Serbians have a rich heritage of folk music, costumes and dancing. They are also known for their intricately woven fabrics.
What are their beliefs? The Gorani Serbian people are almost all Sunni Muslims, but their traditions and customs are full of pagan elements.
What are their needs? Serbian Gorani people need to see their critical need for their savior who loves them, and desires a personal relationship with them. They need to see past their world, and see that they have no acceptance with the creator of the universe, except on His terms, through His Son.
