Introduction / History

The Kayastha Sribastab are a Hindu people who live in north and central India. A small number live further north in Nepal. The Kayashta were traditionally members of a caste of scribes who kept written records for the kingdoms of north India. At times the Kayastha held a near monopoly of government positions in accounting and administration. Within the Kayasthta community, there are subgroups, including the Sribastab.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today they are employed in the professions, the arts and in government administration. Their primary language for those in Nepal is Awadhi. As educated Indian people they also speak English.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Scribastab Kayashta people in Nepal practice only Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews.

What Are Their Needs?

Sribastab Kayashta people in Nepal need more than anything else to know Almighty God who came to earth in the form of a man, who is Jesus Christ, and paid the price for their eternal life to set them free. Although the Bible, audio, and visual resources exist in their Awadhi language, they remain an unreached people group. They need someone to tell them.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Sribastab Kayashta interest in the spiritual and supernatural would lead them to discover the unsurpassed holiness and power of Christ. Pray that their Hindu focus on experiencing many gods would move them to seek spiritual truth.
