Introduction / History The Sartang are a small tribal, Buddhist people who live in mountains of northeast India. Their two main occupations are farming and animal husbandry. They are classified as a Scheduled Tribe, meaning that they are eligible for public jobs and special university admissions. The Satang speak their own endangered Sartang language. Gospel Recordings are currently available in Sartang. Where are they located? This Buddhist people group lives in northeastern India in the state of Arunachal Pradesh near the Chinese and Bhutanese borders. What are their lives like? The Sartang live in villages in the hills and mountains of northeast India. They grow maize, wheat, lentil, vegetables, and fruit in the valleys near rivers. They raise goats, sheep and yaks for their meat, milk and hides. They trade animals and their products for things that they cannot make for themselves such as cell phones, solar panels and appliances.
The Sartang have their distinctive colorful clothing, dances and music. They celebrate Buddhist and their own holidays. Monogamy or marriage to one spouse is the norm. Families arrange marriages often with young people from other villages. The bride goes to live with the groom's family. What are their beliefs? The Sartang practice Buddhism heavily mixed with animism. Since Buddhism has the flexibility to allow for the worship of many spirit beings, tribal Buddhist peoples like the Sartangs practice animism, a belief in the spirit world. In animism, evil spirits in nature must be appeased through prayers, sacrifices and rituals. What are their needs? The Sartang need good schools for their children. They need access to modern medical care. Solar panels can bring electricity for cell phones and appliances. The Sartang need to learn new job skills if they are to compete in Indian society. Most of all, the Sartang need to hear and respond to the message of Jesus Christ. He alone can forgive their sins and deliver them from their fear of evil spirits.
