Introduction / History The Idaksahak ("Sons of Isaac") formerly were herders for Tuareg nobles, in return for their protection. This relationship has now broken down and there is less mixing of the two peoples, except they use the same watering holes and trade at the same markets. Some migrated to sub-Saharan Africa between the eighth and ninth centuries, and they were among the first Muslim groups in the area.
What are their lives like? More of them are town dwellers than at any time in their history. Others have become settled farmers. Many are nomads and have few possessions apart from their animals. The nomads may range into Algeria and Niger. Life has essentially remained one of pastoral care for livestock century after century. They are nomads who hold few possessions and continually stay on the move across the deserts of Algeria. The men are often bi-lingual, speaking their own language and the language of the Tuareg. The women and children are often isolated in their camps and speak only their own language. Schooling is available only in the towns and will likely be in French. They carry out trade with the Arabs in the region, exchanging their livestock for agricultural goods.
What are their beliefs? They were once religious experts and livestock tenders for higher caste Tuareg (aka, Tamacheq) factions. They remain solidly Sunni Muslim. Islam is a central part of their identity. Their faith is in the religious system of Islam, not in the blood of Christ.
