Introduction / History

The mountains of Nayarit, Mexico provided the Cora people a natural shield from the Spanish Empire until the 1700s. Finally, in 1722, roughly 200 years into their rule in Mexico, the Spaniards conquered and “Christianized” the Cora people. They speak the Cora dialect. Some speak Spanish and English.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Cora people migrate to the US to work in agriculture. They often find themselves in Colorado, a mountainous state. Those who come want to stay permanently, much to the disappointment of their elders in Nayarit. They find better opportunities there than they can find in their homeland where people are struggling to grow enough food.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Cora religion is a syncretistic blend of traditional religion and Roman Catholicism. They have their own gods and believe in sacred caves and plants.

What Are Their Needs?

The Cora people need their lives to be devoted to Jesus Christ alone, so he can give them life to the full.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to woo Cora people into a vibrant, unshakable faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray for Christ followers among the Cora to disciple others who will disciple others.
Pray for the Lord’s powerful transformation of Cora families as a testimony to others of his goodness and love.
