Introduction / History
The Bhangi are a scheduled Caste of India. The name Bhangi comes from the word hemp. Many of them are sweepers.
In Gujarat, the Bhangi are not vegetarians and eat wheat and rice as cereals. They make bamboo items and some clean houses. The women are classed as the same importance as men when it comes to the family. They speak Gujarati.
In Rajasthan, the Bhangi speak Mawari and Hindi. Some of them do skilled work. Some own land and work on it. They use modern medicines.
In West Bengal they speak Hindi and Bengali and read and write in Devanagari. Property inheritance goes to the sons who get the same amounts as each other.
In Maharashtra they speak Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. In Damian and Diu they speak, read and write in Gujarati. In Assam they speak Rajasthani.
In Goa, the Bhangi speak Hindi and are endogamous, meaning they prefer to marry within their community.
