Introduction / History
The Gauda live in Orissa in India. They migrated from Magadh. They speak Oriya. They eat rice as their main cereal and they are not vegetarians. The Gauda have community councils to settle matters. They have four sub-groups and have several surnames.

The Gauda prefer cross-cousin marriages. Bride prices and dowries are given. Marriages are done by a Brahmin priest. Divorce is allowed if agreed on by the council. Widows and widowers can marry again. Inheritance once the father has died goes to the sons. The dead are buried.

The Gauda are landowners. Many do agricultural work and cattle herding. Women and children work too. They are Hindus and mainly worship Krishna. In addition to careers as professional workers, some of them are political leaders. Family planning is used by the Gauda.
