Introduction / History
The Maheshwari of India are Hindus who worship Shiva. They speak Mawari and Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. They are vegetarians who eat wheat as a cereal. Trading is their main work. Some of them work for the government and some work privately.

In Rajasthan, the Maheshwari are monogamous. Widows cannot marry again. Marriage is at the home of the home of the bride with a Brahmin priest performing the ceremony. Sons inherit the property on the death of the father with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home. The dead are cremated. They have caste councils to look after them and to judge in matters. They use modern medicines and family planning too.

In Maharashtra many of them are self-employed. Those in the villages tend to do agricultural work. They are well-educated.

In Madhya Pradesh they have adult marriages that are arranged by parents. Men can marry again.

The Maheshwari also live in Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
