Introduction / History
The Joshi are an endogamous group in India.

In Uttar Pradesh, they speak in Hindi and read and write in Devanagari script. They are vegetarians. A dowry is paid in marriages. Sons inherit the property and the oldest son assumes charge of the home when the father dies. There are marriage rituals and the dead are cremated. They are priests and astrologers and are Hindus by religion. They take advantage of education, modern medicines and family planning.

In Madhya Pradesh, the Joshi are generally not vegetarians but there are some who are. They eat wheat and rice as their main cereals. Monogamy is the usual way in marriage but not always. Women as well as men can marry again. In addition to being astrologers, some work in agriculture and others in government or in office work.

Prayer Points
