The Marathi speak Marathi and local languages too and read and write Devanagari. They are mainly non-vegetarians. They were famous for being warriors. Hinduism is their religion. Shinde is one of the Maratha sub groups.
In Maharashtra cousin marriages are liked. Widowers and divorcees can marry again. The dead are cremated. They work in agriculture mainly. Some work in business. They have a traditional council to look after them. Education is favored by them.
In Goa the Maratha speak Konkani too. They use family planning.
In Uttar Pradesh the Maratha are vegetarians who eat rice. Divorce is not allowed and the bereaved can marry again. On the death of the father, sons and also daughters who are not married inherit the property with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home. They use modern medicine.
The Maratha also live in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana.
