Introduction / History
The Coong or Cong in Vietnam speak Cong and Thai. They originally came from Laos. They are cultivators. They grow cotton which they trade for textiles. They make mats and baskets among other items. The Cong travel in boats. Their staple cereal is rice.
The Cong live in houses on stilts. Women are enjoy high position and respect in their families. They are monogamous and have marriage ceremonies. Women are sitting down when having babies. Pregnant women use herbal medicines. For the dead, a ritual specialist performs the service, believing the soul goes to the ancestors.
The Cong worship ancestors and have festivals and ceremonies. Customs are passed down from one generation to another. They like to sing and dance at weddings and other ceremonies. Their children play games with bamboo toys.
